چکیده

This chapter describes a methodology to reduce patient waiting time in a for-profit ambulatory surgical center. Patients in this facility are scheduled in advance for the various operations, and yet operations start late, last longer than expected creating undesired delays. Although this facility is limited to ambulatory surgery, it provides a large number of different surgeries, which are scheduled using “block” scheduling approach. The methodology presented generates a more accurate schedule by creating better time estimates for the operations and with lower variability. The effect of sequencing the surgeries, such that the ones with lower variability are performed earlier in the day, is also discussed. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-60960-872-9.ch012

An analytical model based on simulation aiming to improve patient flow in a hospital surgical suite

Surgical suits allocate a large amount of expenses to hospitals; on the other hand, they constitute a huge part of hospital revenues. Patient flow optimization in a surgical suite by omitting or reducing bottlenecks which cause loss of time is one of the key solutions in minimizing the patients’ length of stay[1] (LOS) in the system, lowering the expenses, increasing efficiency, and also enhanc...

Appointment process of open-heart surgery in Shahid Rajaei Heart Hospital using a discrete event simulation approach

Background: The waiting list is a list of selected patients in the surgical queue. If demand exceeds capacity, the waiting list grows rapidly, which may lead to unacceptable waiting for patients, especially those in need of acute medical care. Patients waiting for heart surgery are placed on the waiting list for surgery, and sometimes the waiting time is longer than patients expect. Reducing th...
